The Legendary Heritage Of The Record Player - Certainly One Of America's Favorite Gizmos
Nowadays we've got digital video disks, compact disks, MP3s, and of course the internet for all our music needs. However, not one of those would have been likely if it weren't for the invention of the record player, one of the most important pieces of electronics of all time. It was so cutting edge that following its creation in 1877, nearly 100 years passed before it was replaced by newer technologies. And still today, record players offer a classic musical feel that makes them very popular with music fans all around the world. Nowadays, anytime someone thinks of a record player, it is often the Technics or the Crosley record player . But more than one hundred years ago, the name which most mattered was Thomas Edison.
Back in 1877, Edison created what he called the phonograph. His first records had been produced on tinfoil. These records featured a spiral groove which went up and down the surface. A hand-cranked machine with a pin, or stylus, was utilized to read the grooves of the disc, vibrating based on the feel. This became eventually known as the hill-and-dale method. The vibrations would run up the stylus, through a metallic tubing, all the way to a big speaker. These early speakers would magnify the vibrations into more audible sound.
When Edison completed his creation, he was far more interested in its numerous scientific purposes rather than the fact that it was perfect for the reproduction of music. This left further progress to other inventors.
A decade later, Emile Berliner made the first disk record, and patented it in 1896. Berliner's design was based on Edison's, but instead of using the traditional hill-and-dale method, where the grooves went up and down, his method, the varying lateral direction method, featured textures on the edges of the grooves. The varying lateral direction (VLD) caught on quickly, and soon Edison's hill-and-dale method was left behind.
It was not long before mass production of disk records became feasible when Emile Berliner invented the matrix record. This master copy allowed for duplicate records to be pressed indefinitely. At this time, record players were still hand-cranked. But then came the late nineteenth century, and along with it, electricity. Then soon after the electric-powered record player was released. Unlike the hand-turned players that would fluctuate in speed in accordance with the strength of the operator, electronic players offered consistent speed. This meant that there was no variation in the music's tempo.
Gradually, record players grew to be so well liked that entire families gathered around them to enjoy quality entertainment. Early versions of the prior-song and skip-song features of present day Mp3 players were also made around this time. In order to choose which track was to play, a listener placed the needle in one of the blank grooves in between the textured ones. And for many years, the record player dominated households all over the world.
With the advent of the seventies came cassette-tape decks and 8-track players, and soon thereafter, records and their players had some competition. However, when DJ-ing became popular in clubs and discos, the record player reclaimed its dominance.
