Placing A Large Bird Feeder - Are You Attracting The Wild Birds Or Providing The Squirrels?

When you look around a properly landscaped garden there are certain points that you are most certainly going to observe. Among other things of a landscaping design, one of them is typically a large bird feeder. It helps decorate the yard and at the same time attracts birds to be enjoyed by everyone in the family.

Of course, if a homeowner likes to maximize the full effect of a feeder they need to make a good decision as to what specific one they want to get and where it will be placed in the landscaping. Both of these areas are important elements that will make or break your ultimate goal.

Positioning of a feeder is just like anything else dealing with real estate. The primary thing to remember is location, location, location. If it is set too far from where family members will be sitting or can easily observe the wild birds then it takes away from the calming and soothing result of bird watching. Place it too close to a house or where the little ones play and the birds will avoid using it.

But distance is just part of the problem. How your large bird feeder is set up will also come into play. For example, a pole-mounted model allows the freedom to install it wherever a homeowner wants. While these are very common and well worth the effort of setting up there is a drawback: squirrels. They are masters at climbing and can go up a pole easily. Soon your food source will be feeding a multitude of squirrels.

There are actually other ways around these scavengers. There are squirrel-proof models that will enable birds to come and go easily, but make it literally impossible for a squirrel to enter. These are a little more complex than a standard large bird feeder, and therefore more pricey, so it comes down to how badly you want to prevent those silly squirrels from entering the bird's food source.

While having a large bird feeder is an asset to a garden, having an incorrect model for the situation is not only a waste of money, but it cheats the birds out of a viable food source that they may want. A good option may be to go to a garden center and see what models are out there.

However, your best course may be to review all the different models of bird feeders online to find what you need. There is a larger variety available via the Internet. Browsing the Internet on your netbook searching for a large bird feeder while observing the birds that already come to your yard may be just the inspiration you need.
