Opinions On Hurley, The Brand New Record From Geek Rock Outfit Weezer
Geek rock outfit Weezer return this year with their 8th studio record. After the highly mixed reviews their prior effort (Raditude) received, what's to be expected on Weezer's new album, Hurley?
1) Memories
An OK power-pop song with a captivating chorus, and stereotypically simple Weezer lyrics. Featuring background vocals by Johnny Knoxville and co!
2) Ruling Me
Sometimes the more recent Weezer songs have been slammed for being too superficial, and this tune is not going to allay that criticism. However, it's great for what it is: a simple, high energy pop-rock offering.
3) Trainwrecks
This is a much deeper, more thoughtful, slower tune with crunchy guitars and unapologetic hooks.
4) Unspoken
Best song on the CD. Starting off as a lightweight and breezy acoustic tune, with a little atmospheric flute, it ends with some weighty guitar!
5) Where's my sex?
This is a dirtier track, but only when it comes to the sound; not the lyrics. It's not about sex, strangely, it's about socks. A bit uninspired, but the bridge is decent.
6) Run Away
Deep and emotional song, with an angsty, almost irritated feel. The most emotional song on the record, written with Ryan Adams.
7) Hold On
Terrific example of pop-rock. The catchy repetition of the track grabs your thoughts and pulls you along with it.
8 ) Smart Girls
Tracks like this are perhaps why Weezer lyrics get criticised. You'll either really like it or skip it. Fluffy, generic and feels manufactured.
9) Brave New World
This song has some spirit to it, but doesn't seem to get anywhere. You might skip this.
10) Time Flies
Feels almost like a demo, a nice song to sing along with. A cute little song with a different feel to the other tracks of the CD.
Rating: 6.5 / 10
Taken as a whole, a significant improvement on the last album. A good, entertaining pop album, if not innovative or inspiring.
