You can make many different types of things out of graphite, including graphite lubricants, brake linings, refractories and also in steelmaking. This mineral is known to have so many uses, which makes it the most suitable raw material for various goods. What actually is graphite?
Graphite is a mineral that is considered to be the most stable carbon type there is. Because of this variation, it is used as the basis when finding out the heat of formation of different carbon compounds. It is one of the allotropes of carbon, which also includes diamond, amorphous carbon, lonsdaeleite, buckytube, plus three more.
Natural graphite comes in three principal types:
1. Amorphous graphite - this form is the product of coal's thermal metamorphism. It is available in the form of fine particles. It is also called meta-anthracite.
2. Flake graphite - this type is also named crystalline flake graphite. It is often plane and has hexagonal, angular or irregular sides.
3. Vein graphite - this form is also known as lump graphite. It appears like a huge bunch of fibrous crystalline aggregates and is generally found in fissure fractures and veins. It is believed to be produced hydrothermally.
Graphite has many properties that make it recognizable from other minerals and alltropes of carbon. Initially, if you look at its atoms in a microscopic level, its atoms develop a hexagonal lattice with a fixed space between the planes. Second, it is capable of conducting electricity because its carbon deposits are strongly electron delocalized. Third, it has thermal and audio abilities. Finally, it has amazing dry lubricating and self-lubricating characteristics, making it preferred in many industries.
Graphite may be natural or man-made. Natural graphite is generally used to make steel, rafractories, expanded graphite, foundry facings lubricants and also graphite lubricants. Synthetic graphite, on the other hand, is typically used in electrodes, neutron moderator, powder and scrap, along with RCCs or reinforced carbon-carbon products, such as gold clubs, pool cue sticks, fishing rods, and cycle frames.
Around the world, there are many graphite mining quarries and areas. In Sri Lanka, there is an underground site where lump or vein graphite can be mined. Machineries and products like bulldozers are used to dig through the ore and extract the graphite.
To be able to get graphite and manufacture it to produce various goods, different methods and techniques are being employed. Of course, tools and machines are also a necessity to make everything easier and faster.
